It was “Body and Soul” performed by Benny Goodman, on my dad’s Smithsonian Jazz cassette collection.
For me, I only write songs in one mood: ready to write a song mood. That’s a very encouraged, inspired, creative space. I can pull up the bad moods, the sadness from that vantage point, but I’ve never entered an anger trance and come to with a big fat song. I have to be really present and centered to make it happen.
I absolutely would. I just don’t know how the audience is going to come to an agreement as to what they want to hear.
I’ve never tried to deliberately make a name for myself in the hip hop world. I just think that more than any other genre right now, hip hop is the most “open source,” musically. I can play blues over hip hop better and easier than I could over almost any pop music. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing guitar has been on hip hop sessions. I can give you a few reasons why hip hop and the Grateful Dead have a lot in common.
